The Law Firm Marketing Playbook for 2027

How legal web marketing is splitting into search, social, and AI-answer channels in 2027 - and how to allocate budget across all three without spreading your firm too thin.

How legal web marketing is splitting into search, social, and AI-answer channels in 2027 - and how to allocate budget across all three without spreading your firm too thin.

The Law Firm Marketing Playbook for 2027

For a decade, “marketing for law firms” meant one thing: rank on Google, run some Google Ads, and keep your Google Business Profile clean. That’s no longer the whole picture. By 2027, the client’s search for representation is split across a search engine, a social feed, and increasingly, a conversation with an AI assistant - and each of those channels rewards a different kind of content.

This isn’t a call to abandon what works. It’s a call to stop treating “website” and “marketing” as the same line item, and start treating your firm’s web presence as the hub that feeds every channel around it.

1. Your website is infrastructure, not a brochure

Every paid channel - Google Ads, Meta Ads, ChatGPT Ads - sends traffic somewhere. If that somewhere is a slow, generic template with no proof and no clear next step, you’re paying to leak leads. Before increasing ad spend anywhere, audit:

  • Page speed and mobile experience - a slow intake page kills conversion on paid traffic faster than a bad headline.
  • Practice-area specificity - “Personal Injury” pages convert worse than “Rear-End Collision Injury Claims in [City]” pages built around real search and ad intent.
  • A single, obvious next step - call, form, or chat. Not all three competing for attention above the fold.

2. SEO and GEO are now the same job

Search engines and AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews) pull from overlapping signals: clear structure, direct answers, real credentials, and consistent facts about your firm across the web. Writing for one increasingly means writing for the other. The practical shift for 2027:

  • Answer the question in the first two sentences of every page - both humans and AI summarizers reward this.
  • Keep your name, address, phone, and practice areas identical across your site, GBP, and every legal directory. AI answer engines cross-reference this for trust.
  • Add FAQ sections with real questions clients actually ask, not keyword-stuffed filler.

3. Paid channels are diverging, not consolidating

Google Ads still owns high-intent, “I need a lawyer now” searches. Meta Ads reach people before they know they have a legal problem - estate planning, business formation, family law transitions. ChatGPT Ads and similar AI-assistant placements are catching people mid-conversation, when they’re asking an AI for advice and get a sponsored, disclosed recommendation instead of a generic answer.

Running all three the same way is the most common mistake we see. A Google Ads-style hard CTA (“Call Now”) feels aggressive in a Meta feed and stranger still inside an AI conversation. Match the message to the moment the client is in, not the channel’s mechanics.

4. Budget allocation for 2027

If you’re a solo or small firm deciding where the next marketing dollar goes, a reasonable starting split:

  • 50% search (SEO + Google Ads) - this is still where clients go when they’ve decided they need a lawyer.
  • 25% social (Meta Ads + organic) - for practice areas with longer decision cycles.
  • 15% AI advertising (ChatGPT Ads and similar) - early, but growing fast, and cheaper to test now than it will be once every firm in your market catches on.
  • 10% held back - for testing whatever channel shows up next. There will be one.

This week’s checklist

  • Audit your site’s page speed and mobile intake flow before touching ad budgets.
  • Rewrite one practice-area page to lead with a direct answer in the first two sentences.
  • Confirm your NAP (name, address, phone) matches exactly across your site, GBP, and directories.
  • Pick one channel outside your current mix (Meta or ChatGPT Ads) and run a small test this quarter.
